If you're not familiar with the tradition, the book explains it... every year, Santa's elf arrives to keep an eye on the little boys and girls in the house. The kids get to choose a name for him first thing. He flies back to the North Pole every night to report on whether the little ones are naughty or nice throughout the day. At night the little elf gets into mischief and shows up in a different spot in the house for the kids to find.
On Christmas Eve, the elf makes his last trip and leaves a note that he will be back the next year.
